MyPollow Cyber Symposium

Post in Word Formaticons8-microsoft-word-48

I am an historian of United States History my focus is twentieth century history. I am not a cyber security expert; however, I do maintain two websites and this blog. As a result, I am familiar with the process of looking for anomalies in code. It is tediously slow and time consuming. No one, not even a cyber security expert can look at scrolling information on a giant screen, and find anomalies let alone evidence of election fraud. Mike Lindell held his three-day cyber symposium last week at which he promised to provide “non-subjective evidence” that the 2020 election was hacked by the Chinese.1 The symposium began on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, and concluded on Thursday, August 12, 2021.

Mike Lindell is the CEO of MyPillow, rabid Trump supporter, and far right conspiracy theorist. Since November 3, 2020, Lindell has echoed the baseless claims of Sydney Powell and Rudy Giuliani that Dominion voting machines were somehow compromised causing Donald Trump to lose the election. These claims were rejected by the Federal courts by judges appointed by Donald Trump. Dominion is now suing Mike Lindell, Sydney Powell, and Rudy Giuliani as well as several media outlets because of their false claims for 1.3 billion dollars.2 When Lindell became aware of the court ruling, on August 11, 2021, he was on stage at the symposium, and he abruptly left.3

Lindell had additionally claimed that after the symposium and the publication of the irrefutable evidence, Trump would be reinstated as President of the United States. The problem is that there is no mechanism either in the Constitution of the United States or in Federal statute that would allow such a thing to take place. Not even a ruling of the Supreme Court. The Vacancy in offices of both President and Vice President; officers eligible to act 3 USC § 19 (a) and (b) state:

    1. If, by reason of death, resignation, removal from office, inability, or failure to qualify, there is neither a President nor Vice President to discharge the powers and duties of the office of President, then the Speaker of the House of Representatives shall, upon his resignation as Speaker and as Representative in Congress, act as President.
    2. The same rule shall apply in the case of the death, resignation, removal from office, or inability of an individual acting as President under this subsection.
  1. If, at the time when under subsection (a) of this section a Speaker is to begin the discharge of the powers and duties of the office of President, there is no Speaker, or the Speaker fails to qualify as Acting President, then the President pro tempore
of the Senate shall, upon his resignation as President pro tempore and as Senator, act as President.4

Now, the Speaker of the House of Representatives and the President pro tempore of the United States Senate are both members of the Democratic Party. The law says nothing about and does not allow for action taken by the Supreme Court; therefore, no action will be taken by the Supreme Court.

Lindell may not be aware of or understand Title 3 quoted above. Additionally, he may not remember that the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency stated, on November 12, 2020, that “The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history….” “There is no evidence that any voting system deleted or lost votes, changed votes, or was in any way compromised.”5 Furthermore, Lindell may not know of or may have discounted Attorney General Bill Barr’s conversation with Trump on December 1, 2020, when Barr told Trump to Trump’s face that Trump’s election fraud claims were “bullshit.”6 Earlier Barr gave an interview to the Associated Press (AP) in which he made clear the “Justice Department has uncovered no evidence of widespread voter fraud that could change the outcome of the 2020 election.” In other words, Barr stated as of the date of the interview … “We have not seen fraud on a scale that could have effected a different outcome in the election.”7 Two weeks later, on December 14, 2020, Barr resigned.

For nine months Lindell has claimed the 2020 election was stolen and he has terabytes of evidence to prove it. As an historian this claim sounds familiar. In February 1950, Senator Joseph R. McCarthy from Wisconsin stated in a Wheeling West Virginia speech he had a list of communists working in the State Department. The number of people on that list varied from 57 to 205 to a lot. The fact is McCarthy never had such a list.8 McCarthyism is a prime example of the illogic of waste—time, potential; resources all to advance a single person’s career or agenda. In Lindell’s case, for communists read election fraud. At least, Lindell’s symposium did not last as long as McCarthy’s hearings. In the end, McCarthy’s search for communists produced nothing, except the addition of a new word to the English language–McCarthyism.9

Did the Sioux Falls South Dakota cyber symposium produce any evidence that China interfered with the 2020 election? No. The symposium did not get off to a good start, on Tuesday, August 10, 2021, because of technical difficulties, which Lindell claimed were due to the attacks of hackers.10 The event went downhill from there. On Wednesday, August 11, 2021, the invited cyber experts lost interest as Lindell incessantly spoke about his “evidence,” but produced nothing.11 Even former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon, who was charged on August 20, 2020, with defrauding donors to an online fundraising campaign to build a border wall and pardoned by Trump, said Lindell should produce the evidence. “You’ve laid a theory of the case that is very powerful, but in laying that case out, you’ve got to bring the receipts.”12 Adding insult to injury, Josh Merritt cyber expert on the team hired by Lindell told the Washington Times Wednesday, that “packet captures are unrecoverable in the data and that the data, as provided, cannot prove a cyber incursion by China.” Merritt added, “So our team said, we’re not going to say that this is legitimate if we don’t have confidence in the information.”13

In the end, Lindell’s cyber symposium is another prime example of the illogic of waste—time, potential; resources all to advance a fantastic notion that had absolutely no chance of becoming reality. Lindell’s symposium produced no evidence of election fraud and Trump will not be reinstated. So, for a majority of the country nothing has changed; people go about their lives as before. But, what of Trump supporters? They were promised evidence that would support their belief, and they were given none. Will they alter their views to fit the facts? Or alter the facts to fit their views? What of Lindell? Was the symposium just a con to sell pillows? Or was Lindell the victim of a con man? Lindell has been silent since the end of the symposium on Thursday, August 12, 2021, will he fade into the background and concentrate on his legal defense in the Dominion lawsuit? A lot of questions, damn few answers.

Eric Clapton, After Midnight, and Amazon Music

Clapton_is_God

I have an Amazon music subscription. I listened to a lot of radio when I was a kid; I had a radio show in college, so I have a good number of song titles in my head. I’ve been listening to a lot of Eric Clapton lately, and why not? There’s a particular version of After Midnight that I like. It’s the 1988 version used in the Michelob commercial. It is also on Disc Number 4 of his Crossroads Box Set (it is listed as After Midnight) not a terribly useful title when you’re trying to distinguish it from the original cover version. All I can play on the Amazon Echo is the original cover version. There is no way for me to verbally distinguish between the two versions. I have tried (1988 version of After Midnight), (extended version of After Midnight), and (After Midnight from the Michelob commercial) Any suggestions? I suppose there is a bright side, the problem does force me to continue to use my iPod.

Windows 10 2004 Feature Update

Yesterday, I decided to install Windows 10 2004; chiefly because I couldn’t put it off any longer. Both my machines were ready for it and it was being offered through Windows Update. My laptop, the machine I rely on the most, is an Acer Core i5 with 16 GBs of RAM. I started the process at 8:24 a.m. yesterday morning and my machine was ready to use at 12:41 yesterday afternoon. Over four hours was taken up by the installation of this feature update. Nothing went wrong, I didn’t have to look up anything on the internet; the process just took that long. To find out what was new I had to go to thurrott.com and read Paul’s article, for the improvements were not obvious. While, the new search feature is nice and it is also nice to be able to name virtual desktops, and there are improvements to the your phone application; which I cannot get to work on my Galaxy Note 9. I do not think that these improvements were worth four hours of my time.

I put the time and the percentage of the process complete into a spreadsheet, which is below. In addition to the data, I also made charts.

Marriott Phone Scam

phone-scam

On February 9, 2019, I received a robo-call from the group claiming to represent the Marriott corporation. Apparently, I had won something. Clearly this was another scam. The phone number on the caller ID was +1 (215) 589-6715‬. I call the number back immediately, and the voicemail gave the name of Jean-Luc Picard, which confirmed my conclusion; no confirmation was needed. I called the number back today to see if it is still functioning and it is, but with a different message.

The interesting twist is they want the caller’s complete address and phone number in order to be put on there do not call list. I spoke with Marriott International customer service and they assure me that at no time will Marriott call any one and ask for their personal information. Additionally, the voicemail is just a string of common business voicemail phrases until the end when they ask you for your personal information.

I am not Dead and this is a Scam

Every once in a while, I will look in the spam and junk folders of my email accounts. Today, I found the scam email below. I find it interesting because I have never seen this scam before. I am positive that the Federal Reserve would not send anybody email, at least, not from the following address: federalreservebank.@aroma.ocn.ne.jp. Additionally, any legal representative would have a more professional email address: evancottman@gmail.com, and hopefully would not send out an email with as many mistakes in it. The name Evan Cottman shows up in connection with at least two other scams on the first page of Google search results.

Under no circumstances reply to this email and give these scum bags any information. I have included the header of the email minus my email address.

Microsoft Does not Have a Refund Department

Scam

I have been getting a lot of calls from a group that claims to be the Microsoft refund department. The thing is Microsoft doesn’t have a refund department. I do a lot of business with Microsoft I have a professional Office365 account. If Microsoft was going to refund me any money they would simply put it on my credit card. No one from Microsoft would call me. Nevertheless, I have been getting calls from people Who call themselves Microsoft refund department it is a scam. The reason I know this is because the following phone Number is fake ‭+1 (805) 246-7994‬. If you receive a call from the Microsoft refund department hang up immediately. It is a scam. Under no circumstances give them any information.

Microsoft PDF Reader?

mspdf

Recently, I purchased a new laptop. I haven’t had a chance to install Acrobat reader. However, Windows 8.1 has Microsoft PDF reader. This morning I came across a PDF that I wanted to add to one of my notebooks, so I attempted to insert it as a print out. OneNote 2013 could not recognize it. I downloaded and installed Adobe acrobat reader, and tried again. It worked. Microsoft PDF reader does not work with OneNote 2013. I don’t understand.

Office 365 public website feature being discontinued…

I learned last week that the Office365 public website feature is being discontinued. Microsoft is no longer offering the feature to new Office365 customers, and existing customers have two years that is until March 2017 to find a new hosting platform and move their data. The loss of the public website did not concern me as much as the loss of the ability of users of my website to view Word documents and PowerPoint presentations in Office Online (Office Web Apps). As I explained to the Sharepoint Online support team at Office365:

One of the key features of the public facing website is the ability for my users to view documents in office Web apps. Microsoft lists a number of third-party solutions none of them have the ability to view documents in the office Web apps (See jgkeegan.com/plans/home.htm). One of the reasons I activated the public facing website feature is the fact Office Web Apps provide somewhat more security from copyright infringement than does the standard PDF file. I have tried to share with (everyone) documents with my one drive for business and my team site, but that has never worked. I require a solution that allows users to be able to view documents in Office Web Apps. None of the third-party solutions listed in the knowledgebase article provide that functionality.

It took two service requests, but they were able to show me a solution. One that, apparently, has been available all along. One drive for business has the capability to share documents and presentations publicly. And one of the members of the support team was kind enough to walk me through the process.

The following video demonstrates how to share an Excel document stored on OneDrive for Business from within the client. The process is the same with Word documents and PowerPoint presentations.

The process is similar when OneDrive is accessed from the web. The first step is selecting a file.

selectdoc01

Next click the three dots. Then, click share.

share02

Then, Click Get a link.

getlink03

After that choose between allowing the public to only view the document or give everyone in the world the ability to edit it. Most, if not all, of the time choose view only.

viewonly04

After clicking create link A public link is generated that can be placed on any webpage or emailed to anyone. Note also the ability to stop sharing any document by clicking disable.

copylinkdisable05

The only drawback, and this is true of the public website if it does not have a vanity domain, is that anyone can print or embed my content on their website without asking permission. I am not happy about that. So, over the next two years I will be moving all my content from the public facing website to OneDrive for business.

Declaration of Independence Worksheet

I finally finished a worksheet for the Declaration of Independence. It’s been on the back burner so long that I forget when I started it. My goal is to provide a portfolio of quality social studies teaching resources for school districts, teachers, and those that are homeschooling students.

The Declaration of Independence worksheet is in two formats. A classroom format that students can fill-in by hand, and a lab format that students can fill-in using Microsoft Word. The lab or form version does not work in Word on-line, if anyone is interested in that copy email me a request and I will provide the file.

Tweeting the installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926

Win10

I spent Tuesday, January 27, 2015 live tweeting the installation of Windows 10 Technical Preview build 9926 on my 2012 Acer Netbook. The tweets are below. In order to get the latest build of Windows 10 I needed to become a Windows Insider. I went to the site and signed up with one of my Microsoft accounts. That is, either an Outlook or a Live account for some reason my Office365 login information would not work. Once an insider I was given the choice of downloading the technical preview via Windows Update or as an ISO image. I did both. My netbook does not have a DVD drive. So, I download and installed the technical preview through Windows Update. I also wanted a copy to store, so I burned the ISO image to DVD. The update and the ISO image are proximately 3 GB in size; and take approximately two hours just to download.

After the update completed downloading, I took a minute to reconsider my decision to install build 9926. There were some important things to consider. First, this version of Windows 10 is not necessarily ready for prime time. That is, it is not a complete version of the operating system. Microsoft engineers are still making changes to it. There could be unanticipated, catastrophic problems, which could turn my netbook into a doorstop. While my Acer is not my production machine, it does have its uses. The second consideration is file loss there are a small number of important files that are stored on the machine, which I forgot to backup before I finalized my decision and started the update process. All my other important files are stored either on my 1 TB removable hard drive or in my Office365 account so they are available to all my devices iPad, iPhone, and Windows machines. Considering the risks acceptable, I started the hours long update process.

A clean install from an ISO image is faster. I did one Thursday, January 29, 2015. I followed the instructions in this article: “How to install Windows 10 Technical Preview from a flash drive.” However, installing Windows 10 on top or long side of Windows 7 Starter makes it easier to restore the old operating system if needed. Simply, use the Windows rollback feature to restore it. Nevertheless, the update method has one major drawback. Every time one logs-in one has to choose to roll back the machine or use Windows 10. In comparison, a clean install of the technical preview has its own issues. One problem that presents itself right away is Avast the free antivirus software is not compatible with Windows 10 at this time, but Avast did work with the upgrade installation. Another free antivirus program 360 Total Security has a version specifically for Windows 10. What interesting problems and discoveries are in the weeks ahead?
